Coloring for Smarties

Tonight we colored. Mama was quite the artist in her younger years. She has done some lovely oil paints, watercolors and pencil sketches. She took art classes in her 60’s. Her teacher told her that she has a true talent.

At nearly 90, that talent and skill showed up again. She was coloring a a picture of two puppies in a hot air balloon. The balloon was in the sky with two puffy clouds above the balloon and one right below. She decided to redesign the picture and make the cloud below the balloon a patch of grass where it was landing. She colored a bit of brown then added in strokes of green so that it actually ended up looking like grass on a brown patch of dirt.

My picture contained a little bear and a cat winding up a jack-in-the-box. How stupid do these people think we are? Have any of you ever seen dogs operating a hot air balloon or a cat and a bear winding up a jack-in-the-box?

I digress. I colored my bear a solid light brown. Mama had colored her puppies light brown also, but she added in shading of darker brown and a little black. She said she wanted to make it look like real dog fur. And it did. There was a 3D quality to it. Go figure.

On the way to her house today, I had run by the store and bought a box of crayons. Though I am 50+10, I love new crayons. They smell good. They are pointy and fresh. They are smooth and the paper isn’t torn. That yellow and green box is like opening a treasure. Well, actually the box is more maize and tropical rain forest.
